Introduction

We were asked to make a project about a company that is using a system or systems that helped the company to generate its business and to be more capable of being used by the company or outside users.

We have chosen Dubai (RTA), the Roads and Transport Authority. It is responsible for managing and improving the transportation traffic in Dubai. Also it provides solutions to facilitate the roads transportation across Dubai to make the roads safer and smoother, as it is an advance transport network which was formed in 2005 uses an effective & an integrated transport system.

The aim of the project is to introduce the main aspect of RTA briefly, and to cover the most common system(s) that helped shaping the companies quality and therefore its reputation.

Dubai RTA

Since Dubai is one of the fastest growing cities in today's world, making the provision of high quality infrastructure facilities is absolutely inevitable (not avoided). In order to do that, providing an advanced transport network for the people of Dubai has been high on the government’s agenda, through the use of Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). Dubai was able to enhance the public transport facilities and improve roads across the emirate to make travel safer and smoother.

  • The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) :
RTA came into formation on November 2005. It is responsible for planning and executing transport and traffic projects in Dubai, and between Dubai and other Emirates of the UAE and in neighboring countries in order to provide an effective and an integrated transport system capable of achieving Dubai's vision & serving the vital interests of the Emirate.

RTA Projects

RTA projects is divided into two categories: current projects and completed projects. We will describe two important projects  in each one (from our perspective).

Ø First the Current projects:

It is an electronic fare collection system based on Check-In-Check-Out (CICO).

 Project aims to:
1. Raise the operational efficiency of the buses by reducing the time required for ticketing.
2. Reduce the burden on drivers and increase productivity.
3. Provide the best system for the collection of fares from all passengers and is a better system to detect those who elude the fare payment.

The AVM system provides real information about the buses status.

The Aims of this project are to:
1. Facilitate the management of the bus system through the central control unit.
2. Utilize the information and statistics provided by the system to enhance, amend and correct the performance of other intelligent systems.
3. Provide advanced services at a high level of quality in the management of bus.

Ø Second  the Completed projects:

The aims of the Metro System are :
1.     provide an alternative mode of transport to ease congestion,
2.      save passengers traveling time,
3.     reduce traffic pollution thereby improving environmental quality,
4.     improve mobility within the City,
5.      Provide connection to Dubai International Airport, and deliver modern, comfortable and reliable services to the Metro users.
6.     The Dubai Metro is intended to provide transport coverage and reach to all strategic areas of the City, and develop the network to branch out into the suburbs with future extensions.
It is worth noting that the Dubai Metro will be a watershed in the Arabian Peninsula as it will be the first Railway System f its kind being introduced in the region, hence there is a lot of excitement and support for it.

 Project Description :
Better Quality - Encourage UAE of Public Transport
- Modern Passenger Amenities - Pull Factor
- Air Conditioning for passengers comfort
- Compliments Luxury Buses & Metro Project

SALIK card

SALIK Card and RFID
One of the technology implemented by the RTA is used in order to archive its mission of the SALIK Card tag that is attached on the vehicles windshield in order to cross the SALIK gates in Dubai becoming the most used service by the drivers.

SALIK Card:
" SALIK" means open or clear, it is the newest  Dubai electronic toll collection system launched in July 2007, which emphasizes the system’s congestion management objectives as well as the choice of technology for the toll system.

SALIK utilizes the latest technology to achieve free flow operation with no impact in traffic flow, allowing vehicles to move freely, through using the advanced Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology ,which is tagged inside the SALIK Card. In this way each time you pass through a SALIK tolling point, AED 4 will be deducted from your prepaid SALIK account.

SALIK tag represents the latest generation technology in tolling, operates with no battery or moving parts, and it should last the life of your windshield. It works in all weather conditions and speeds, and provides highly accurate and reliable identification of your vehicle to the system.

 Note that :
Your SALIK tag must be affixed to your windshield to operate properly and cannot be removed from your vehicle windshield without damaging the tag.

How to install your SALIK Tag?
1.Read all instructions before installing your tag.
2.Install your tag on a proper location, removing any aftermarket tint between the tag and the glass before installation.
3.Install only one SALIK tag  in your vehicle
4.Remove air that may become trapped under the tag.

SALIK system is clear success, says official

The road toll system on Shaikh Zayed Road has helped improve traffic flow and it has been widely appreciated by motorists, said a senior official

"We are very proud to apply the toll system (Salik) successfully and those who have been betting that it will not work, have now agreed that Salik did make a difference," said Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

While the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority chief says that the Salik system has worked well, many motorists feel it has added to traffic congestion on roads. Motorists said that although traffic has reduced on the tolled Shaikh Zayed Road between Al Garhoud Bridge and the Mall of Emirates, they have been facing acute traffic jams on alternative routes. Some motorists felt that the road diversions are meant to force people to use Salik.

RFID

RFID information Systems
RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is a technology that consists of an integrated chip and an antenna for receiving and transmitting the radio waves signal exchanging data between a reader and an electronic tag attached to an object, for the purpose of identification and tracking.
There are two types of RFID systems:
1.      Active RFID tag :
This functions with a battery and can transmit signals autonomously.
2.     Passive RFID tag:
Needs no battery and can transmit signals but needs a device to provoke that.
SALIK card in Dubai uses the second type of RFID tag which is the Passive RFID. Below is a picture with detail of  how the SALIK works with RFID tag as a car gets through one of  the SALIK gates.

  •  Advantage of the RFID :-

  1. Non-line of sight identification of tags
  2. Unattended operations are possible, minimizing human errors and high cost.
  3. Ability to identify moving elements that have tags embedded.
  4. Larger area of coverage. Up to several feet.
  5. Can be used in diverse environments, including live stock, military, and scientific areas.
  6. RFID can be used in addition to Bar Code. These two technologies can be complementing each other.
  7. Automatic integration with back end software solutions provide end to end integration of data in real time.

  •   Disadvantages of RFID:
  1. Expensive compared with Bar code
  2. Bulkier, due to embedding of electronic components in the tag. However, with advanced techniques, it is possible to reduce the size, and weight of the tags to a large extent.
  3. Prone to physical/electrical damage due to environmental conditions. For example, tags that are subjected to space exploration may encounter extreme temperatures. The tags required to be designed for a given application, and may be costly when designed for use under extreme environmental conditions.
